Philodendron 'Anderson's Red'
Philodendron ‘Anderson’s Red’ is a rare and eye-catching hybrid, loved for its dramatic red petioles and lush, paddle-shaped leaves that mature to a deep glossy green. New growth often emerges flushed with bronzy-red tones, creating a bold contrast against the vibrant red stems. Unlike trailing types, this variety grows upright, making it ideal for indoor plant styling in pots or feature planters with a support structure like a coco fibre pole or an interesting branch to climb up.
With its vivid colours and neat growth habit, ‘Anderson’s Red’ makes a striking addition to modern interiors. It reaches around 70cm wide and as tall as you let it get, performing best in warm, bright spaces protected from direct sun. While still uncommon in New Zealand, it’s gaining popularity among collectors for its colour and hardiness.
Toxic if ingested.
Care Instructions
Light: Bright, indirect light preferred. Can tolerate medium light but colour may fade in low light.
Water: Water when the top 2–4cm of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering or soggy soil.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Benefits from misting or a nearby pebble tray.
Temperature: Keep above 15°C. Avoid cold windows or sudden drafts.
Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep tidy. Cut entire top section off and repot in spring to encourage a mature leaf form while maintaining a usable height.
Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when rootbound. Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix.
Pests: Generally resilient but monitor for mealybugs and spider mites in dry conditions.
